Vusabantu AIDS project
is a fully South African non-profit organisation registered as a section 21 company.
The Vusabantu project was launched in December 2002 at the initiative of ANC Councillor Bongani “Wire” Zondi of Ward 35 in the constituency of White City in Soweto.

The first aim of Vusabantu AIDS project is to assist the primary health care clinics in implementing the clinical guidelines for managing HIV/AIDS patients. The second aim will be to increase the integrated home-based care programs.

Vusabantu AIDS project, has initiated a cooperation programme between the City of Joburg and the City of Paris, one of the main donors of the project at this stage. The project is also supported at the scientific level by the French Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris.

From the inception in 2002 the project was funded by several South African donors (private companies and individuals). The French Embassy also supported the project with a grant.

The Vusabantu HIV/AIDS care unit was officially launched on the 29th of November 2003, in presence of Councillor Prema Naidoo, the health officer of the city of Johannesburg. The deputy Mayor of Paris, Councillor Alain Lhostis, chief of the Health Committee of Paris represented the City of Paris.

The Vusabantu clinic provides free HIV/AIDS care for HIV infected patients. This includes consultation, clinical evaluation, CD4 cell count, treatment and prevention of opportunistic diseases and ARV therapy with emphasis on prevention and education of patients and medical personal.
